The education on the issues of combined joint activities, as well as the interoperability with NATO and the participation of officers in CPX, organized and conducted by the department, is an important stage of their preparation for work in multinational environment. During their preparation they acquire additional knowledge as specialists in different branches of the armed forces, services and special troops about the command and crises and conflict management. New information technology and applied systems are adopted and foreign languages are studied. The planning procedures and the standardization agreements used by NATO armies are introduced.

In the course of training knowledge and practical skills are expanded, of the command and management of troops in peace and wartime and participation in multinational missions, exercises, etc. initiatives with the use of the official NATO languages. The principles of interconnection and continuity of the three stages are applied – education, preparation, exercises and operations.

The Partnership Goals (PGs), related to the corresponding Military Tasks of Interoperability (MTIs) and to other corresponding standards and NATO publications, adopted and adapted for the Republic of Bulgaria, are implemented in interoperability training.

Acquired qualification allows the students to take up positions in the structures of NATO as well as in national and multinational formations.

Education is based on modern pedagogical forms and methods with regard to specifics of the students at the department. It is based on curricula and syllabi in compliance with the academic requirements.

Training takes from one week to several months depending on the objectives. For the purposes of consolidation, practical forms of training follow academic knowledge. Specialized military language and NATO staff procedures are an integral part of language teaching and overall education.

The main methods used are the following: lectures (traditional), lectures-discussions, seminars, discussions, conferences, lessons, military and situation games, command post exercises (CPX) and computer-assisted exercises (CAX).
