National Security and Defence Faculty

Vision

circle The faculty of National Security and Defence will grow as a major institution training military and civilian leaders in security and defence issues, planning and conduct of joint and multinational operations and management of the armed forces and defence resources.

circle The faculty will develop as a centre of excellence in scientific, applied and expert research in the field of security, defence, military art at strategic and operational level, strategic leadership and military history.

Mission

The mission of the ‘National Security and Defence’ Faculty is to train the future military and civilian leaders of the Republic of Bulgaria capable of controlling and managing the operational and strategic units of the Armed Forces and the rest of the elements of the system of national security and defence, to win in military operations and to effectively control peacekeeping, humanitarian and other non-military operations, in this manner realizing the third level of higher military education.

Guiding Principles

High quality modern education is to be guaranteed. To meet this goal, the Faculty:

– maintains the required academic staff at full-time permanent employment and gives them the opportunity to improve and to have access to specialized information;

– provides competent lecturers through cooperation with other departments of the college, relevant armed forces structures, ministries and departments, working in the field of security and defence issues, as well as with research centers and renowned experts from the academic community and the non-governmental sector, institutes and educational institutions from Bulgaria and abroad.

– provides IT support of the training process, including free access to specialized websites.

– conducts a special program for meeting and consulting experts, researchers and heads of departments within the security system and researchers, commanders and political figures from Bulgaria and abroad.

– creates an active training environment through providing opportunities for participation in conferences, symposia, and special seminars, as well as language courses.

– contacts alumni after their graduation and provides them with electronic and printed information on security and defence issues and the opportunity to participate in conferences and seminars for further education.

To meet the training objectives, we establish partnerships with leading universities and institutes, exchange educational programmes and lecturers and exploit fully the opportunities provided by the bilateral military cooperation, the Consortium of military colleges and Partnership for Peace security research institutes, the NATO educational and military training policy within EAPC

To train promising strategic leaders. It is our duty to educate and train officers to acquire critical and creative thinking, modern relations, contemporary management approaches, adequate communicative and mass media skills.

Priorities of the training process. The training process is our chief priority and it is our duty to conduct it at the high level we have announced, regardless of any arising problems concerning resources or IT support.

Cooperation, not competitionCooperation, not competition. Working with students is based on the principles of tolerance of opinion, mutual respect, rules observation and education through dynamic interaction. We set as a priority the joint education of officers of different arms of service and branches of the army and civilian education.

Academic freedom. Academic freedom of opinion, judgment and ideas is guaranteed during the educational process. Participants in training do not represent institutions or departments. The Chatham House Rules are applied to stimulate debates.

High professional standards. We set the standards in the field of our mission. It is our duty to build and keep up the high professional standards concerning the academic staff and administration as a vital aspect of the system for maintaining the quality of education. In order to do so, we encourage the development of mobility and perfectionism of teachers and researchers and set higher standards for their methodological skills and scientific production.

Unity of the academic community. We are a part of the academic community of RDSC and contribute to its prestige as a higher education institution and an internationally acclaimed and historically proved cradle of excellent qualities for our officers.
