Defence Advanced and Research Institute is military and scientific organization, formed by government decree 199 from 04.11.1999 in accordance with the Bulgarian defence and armed forces law, Higher education law and academic degrees and academic ranks law. It is a successor of the former military and scientific organizations, Military Science and Technical Institute, Military Research Institute of the General Staff of the Bulgarian armed forces; Sociological Research Center of MoD.
DARIÕs target work is to do research work connected with national security, defence and the armed forces in the field of armament, military equipment and ammunitions, systems of command, management, communications, computers and intelligence, military property and materials, human factors and defence management.
Mission
The mission of the Advance Defence Research Institute is to conduct scientific and applied research and development in the interest of national security and defence and in support of the process of transformatiom of the Armed Forces.
Research work tasks
 to do research work in the field of systems of command, management, communications, computers and intelligence.
to do research work for the implementation of modern methods, principles and technologies in the process of making new models of armaments and military equipment.
to develop prognoses, concepts, research and analyses for development and improvement of military equipment and technologies.
to give opinions and make professional assessments on programmes, projects, developments and etc., accomplished for the sake of the national security, defence and armed forces
to carry out scientific programmes, projects, developments and others.
to do research on NATO normative and technical equipment and give scientifically proved suggestions ensuring interoperability.
to participate in MoD programmes, projects, developments and etc. in the country as well as in connection with international contracts and agreement.
to participate in assemblies, committees, working groups and etc., for assessing and accepting MoD programs, projects, developments, as well as in military co-operation events.

DARI participates not only in the general research programmes but also forms an assessment system of the educational process in Rakovski Defence and Staff College and supports the initiative activities within the framework of ÔMilitary Budget TransparencyÕ Pact of stability in Southeast Europe.
