The Fifth International Scientific Conference
SEE SECURITY CHALLENGES FACING EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVES OF THE REGION
took place at Inter Expo Center (IEC)

On 11 and 12 September 2007 , the fifth international conference carried out under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria and commander in chief of the armed forces Georgi Parvanov. It was attended with the international specialized exhibition SAFETY &. SECURITY 2007.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Policy for Disasters and Accidents Emel Etem opened the conference. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and Deputy Prime Minister Ivaylo Kalfin delivered the key speech. The Minister of Defense Veselin Bliznakov addressed welcoming speech to the participants in the conference. The Commandant of the General Staff of the Bulgarian Army General Zlatan Stoykov presented a lecture. He considered in details the most important points of the transformation of the Bulgarian Army with significance for our country’s contribution to the strengthening of security in South Eastern Europe .

On 12 of September was conducted the second panel TRANSFORMATION OF SECURITY AND DEFENSE SYSTEMS IN SOUTH EASTERN EUROPE – THE EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE. It focused on the activities of the Armed forces. The Commandant of Rakovski Defense and Staff College Major-General Evgeni Manev opened the panel. He said that the topics of the second panel section were interesting and that the lecturers were famous, knowledgeable and well informed. According to him, the scientific works presented subjects of actuality. The Commandant of Rakovski Defense and Staff College found it as a good reason for congratulating the lecturers. Their lectures included the newest researches on issues concerning security and defense in the South Eastern Europe in the frames of the two panel sessions.

447 participants took part in the conference for the two days. For the first day only were registered 357 . The guests from foreign countries were 38. 67 journalists from 50 print and electronic media covered the event. This shows the high social interest on the presented issues.

All participants agreed with the joint conclusion that the forum demonstrated awareness of the historical opportunity of the region to overcome the negative reputation as a region of insecurity. The international scientific conference contributed to the defining of real risks and threats.
